Food truck! ohh yeahh.

This branding project for the food truck has been a blast! I loved doing it (even though it required staying up til 4 in the morning) and I could totally see myself working in branding as a career.  I think I came up with some pretty good ideas so far, although they still need some refinement, like always.  I decided to go with a coffee shop sorta thing...maybe with some fruit drinks too.  I liked the idea of bringing in the country of Madagascar in the title/theme, because it automatically ties the lemur logo to the name.

The first direction I went in is the weakest.  I sorta liked the idea of the lemur hanging upside-down and holding a coffee cup or a drink, but that theme wasn't as successful as my other two directions.

The second direction is more of a burlap-y and jungle-y pastel-y feel to it, and I think it worked well with my cut and paste lemur.  If I went in this direction, I think I would need to change the name of the company, because "Gidro" ("lemur" in the malagasy language) doesn't necessarily tell what the logo is/means.  But I like how this one looks, and I think it could work well for a cafe.

My last direction was more colorful and bright.  If I had to choose, I think this one would be my favorite.  I love the font as well, and I think it works well with my logo that I chose for this one.  And I like I said before, putting "Madagascar" in the title is more effective than my other titles.  I like using "kafe"(malagasy word for coffee) instead of "cafe" because it's more authentic and a little bit different, yet people would still know that it's a coffee place when reading it.

type 1 project DONE!

Woohoo! I'll post the link to my behance profile below where you can view the final 12 weather layouts that i turned in today :-)

The modular grid project was really interesting, and I can see now how using a grid can truly improve a design. Before i would fumble around not really knowing exactly where to put stuff!  Now I understand how helpful a grid can be.  I'm excited to start learning how to use flash next class, because I've had no experience with it before.

As for Viscom, we are just starting to finish up our grid! Next we are going to make our process books, which should be tons of fun.  I was a little worried at first, but I think my 16 sketches are really starting to turn out well.  I'll just need a little more refinement.  I'll post a picture of what I've done so far...the last few sketches I have done I just haven't put them in the document yet :)

the past week...

alrighty! this week has been busy and super fast.

VISC!
i'm a teensy bit behind in my lemur sketching, but i plan on working on it as soon as i'm done with this post :)  we started to refine our sketches from the first four categories, and we are now working on the next four (cut and paste, alternative marking tool, contour line, texture).  soooo here's a preview of what i've done so far!

there's no alternative marking tool one up, because i don't like any of the ones i have worked on from that category :P

TYPE!
today we went outside again to look for letters.  stephanie roche and i arranged some leaves together and put them so that they were floating in potter lake. it's not completely "found in nature" but it's pretty :)

and as far as the current weather project, i feel like i'm doing pretty well! sometimes i feel like i get in a "writer's block" because i feel like i've arranged them in as many ways as possible...but i just have to keep pushing myself to be creative with the layout. here's a few that i completed last night.

so that's what i've been working on this week! i'm hoping to get a lot done this weekend. :)

adrian frutiger and the univers font!

who is adrian frutiger??

adrian frutiger was known as a type designer, and he created the univers font during the mid-twentieth century. throughout his lifetime, he created about one hundred and seventy typefaces.  after being an apprentice as a compositor, he went to school in switzerland for two years, and then went to paris in 1952 and worked as a typeface designer and artistic manager. he founded his own studio in 1961. univers was the first to show a type family with different weights; it also has no serifs. he also created the fonts serifa, frutiger, linotype, and avenir.  his main focus when creating fonts is legibility while reading, as well as creating them universally applicable.  he claimed that the univers font was the model for both serifa and glypha, which he made in the following years. the univers font is now available in 27 different variations, and allows for flexibility when designing large display sizes as well as small sizes.

adrian frutiger continues to shape the type world with this typefaces, as his fonts are still being used worldwide today.

it's almost the weekend!

this week has been the longest YET! but it's almost over now, and i'm thoroughly looking forward to the weekend (and KU football! ROCK CHALK!).

here's some of my better lemur sketches! these ones i am going to refine and re-work for next wednesday.
gestural

painterly

graphical

shapes
my main focus for these sketches is to make them undeniably lemurs.  i think that this will be most tricky for the bottom two (graphical and shapes) because they are more abstract. the other thing that i want to do is to watch videos on youtube of lemurs, so that i can get a better sense for how they move and interact with their environment.

as for typography, we have been working on weather grids! which now that we are adding color and shapes, has been a lot more fun. (margie's color theory class has helped me out a lot...)

and i'm sure these will be worked on and tweaked...i still have a lot more to do :p

well everyone, have a wonderful weekend! i know i will... :)
